Ark Nova has no rounds. Its rhythm comes from breaks, and breaks come when players push the Break token to the end of its track. That makes the timing of every break a choice someone at the table is making. Strong players make it on purpose.
What moves the Break token
- The Cards action always moves it 2 spaces first, whether you draw or snap.
- The Sponsors action, when you take money instead of playing a sponsor, moves it as many spaces as the strength and pays that much. Side II pays double.
- Some animal and sponsor abilities move it as well. The rulebook’s solo section mentions the Cougar’s Jump 3 as one example that pays money too.
The player who moves it to the last space gets 1 X-token, finishes their turn, and then the break happens. Extra steps past the end are ignored. With the Sponsors cash option, you still take the full money even if the token needed fewer steps.
What a break does
In order, for every player:
- Discard down to the hand limit, 3 or 5 with one university.
- Venom, Constriction, and Multiplier tokens leave your action cards.
- Association workers come home, and the partner zoos and universities refill.
- The display drops the cards in folders 1 and 2 and refills.
- Income: appeal money, kiosks, and income icons on sponsors and revealed map bonuses.
- The Break token resets.
Each step helps some players more than others. That is the whole lesson in one line.
Who a break helps
It helps you if:
- your money is spent and your best cards are already played,
- all your association workers are out and you want them back,
- your hand is at or below the limit,
- a rival is holding a big hand that will be trimmed,
- a rival is waiting for a card in folder 1 or 2 that will be discarded,
- Venom or Constriction tokens are slowing you down.
It hurts you if:
- you are holding more cards than the limit and planned to play them,
- you still have money you meant to spend,
- your association worker is still home and you wanted to use it first,
- you are eyeing a card in folder 1 or 2.
Pushing the break
The Sponsors cash option is the main lever. Taking money and moving the token is often a strong play when you are broke, your hand is light, and rivals are not. You get money now, money again at the break, and an X-token if you finish the push.
Cards is the other lever, and it is easy to forget. Every Cards action moves the token 2. A table that draws a lot runs fast breaks, which punishes anyone hoarding.
Stalling the break
You cannot stop others from pushing, but you can avoid helping. If the break would hurt you, take actions that do not move the token: Animals, Build, Association, or a Sponsors action that plays a card. The token stays put unless someone else pushes it.
When the token is close to the end, any rival can trigger the break with one action. Plan as if it will come on the next turn, and spend accordingly.
Counting the turns until a break
Look at the token’s distance to the end and at each rival’s likely action. A rival with Cards near slot 5 and a full hand probably draws, moving it 2. A broke rival with Sponsors in a high slot may push it 4 or 5 at once. From that, estimate whether you have one turn or three before income. That number tells you whether to spend now or set up.
Breaks near the end
Late in the game, the break becomes part of the endgame math from the endgame lesson. If the end triggers during a break, every player takes one more turn, including the one who caused it. A break also returns workers and pays income, which only matters if turns remain to use them. Before you push the last break, ask whether its income will ever be spent.
Two-minute drill
After any game, find each break on a replay or in your memory and name the player who triggered it. Then ask: did that player gain more from it than anyone else? Good players trigger breaks that help them. If you find yourself triggering breaks that help others, slow down and look at the table before you take money.
