The first break in Ark Nova is the first payday, and the first time the display clears and hands shrink. Everything you do before it either sets up that moment or wastes it. Strong players treat the opening as one plan, not a string of good-looking turns.
This lesson gives you a way to build that plan from what you can see at the start.
What you know at the start
Before your first turn you can see:
- Your 4 kept cards and your 2 Final Scoring cards.
- The 3 or 4 base conservation projects. They never leave, so they are the most reliable targets in the game.
- The display, 6 cards anyone might take.
- Your map’s bonuses, placement spaces, and rock and water.
- The partner zoos and universities on offer.
- Your appeal start. The start player begins at 0, the others at 1, 2, and 3.
That is a lot of information. The trick is to find one thread that ties several pieces together.
Find your thread
Look for overlap between your hand and the base projects. If two of your animals share a continent with a base project, that is your thread: a partner zoo there cuts their cost, adds an icon toward the project, and points your later draws.
If nothing overlaps, choose the cheapest path to appeal instead. Cheap animals that fit enclosures you already have raise income fast, and income compounds at every break.
Three goals for the first break
Write down, even just in your head, what you want by the first break:
- An appeal number. Appeal sets your income. Raising it before the first break pays you at that break and every one after.
- One project level. A low level on a base project, if you can reach it. It reveals a bonus on your zoo map, possibly a recurring income, and moves you toward 2 conservation.
- One upgrade or worker. Reaching 2 conservation lets you flip an action card or add an association worker. A second partner zoo or second university also flips a card.
You will not always hit all three. But a plan that aims at them shapes every early turn.
Building the row backward
Here is how the plan becomes a sequence. Suppose your goals need a 3-space animal from hand, a partner zoo for its continent, and a project at Association strength 5.
- The partner zoo needs Association at strength 3 or more.
- The project needs Association at 5, and your worker comes home only at the break.
- You start with one active association worker, and each task needs one. So unless you gain a second worker first, you can do only one of those tasks before the break.
That conflict is the kind of thing a backward plan catches on turn one, not turn six. You might take the partner zoo now and save the project for right after the break, or skip the partner zoo and use the free Map A enclosure for an animal you can afford at full price.
Common strong openings
There is no single best opening, but a few shapes recur in good play:
- Cheap animals first. The Board Game Arena community tips page puts it simply: go from cheap animals, to medium ones, to expensive ones. Early appeal is income.
- An early partner zoo or university. The same tips page suggests taking one early.
- A sponsor with a purple income effect, played early so it pays at every break.
- A low project level for the track bonuses, as the rulebook itself suggests.
When to push the first break
The first break comes when someone pushes the Break token to the end. If you have spent down and played your best cards, a fast break helps you. If your hand is full of cards you cannot play yet, a fast break costs you. Count the Break token’s distance as part of your plan, and use the break timing lesson at Level 4 to take control of it.
After the break: the second plan
When the first break ends, set three new goals the same way. The second break plan usually leans on projects and bigger animals, because your income is higher and your workers are home.
