Pandemic Endgame Math: Counting to the Last Turn

Pandemic endgame strategy: count the Player deck to find your last turn, check whether each cure is still possible, and watch cubes and outbreaks to the end.

Pandemic does not keep score, so it is easy to think the endgame is all feel. It is not. Every way to win or lose is a number on the table, and every one can be counted. The teams that win close games are the ones that count before the last turn, not during it.

The Player deck is your clock

You lose when a player cannot draw 2 Player cards after their actions. So the deck tells you exactly how much time is left.

At the start of any turn, take the number of cards left in the Player deck, divide by 2, and round down. That is how many more draws the team gets. Add 1 for the turn after the last draw: that player still takes 4 actions before the game ends.

Example: 9 cards left. That is 4 more draws, so this turn and four more get their actions. If the fourth cure is not found by the end of that fifth turn’s actions, the team loses.

Two details matter here:

  • You win the moment the fourth cure is found. A cure during that final turn’s actions still wins, even with no cards left to draw.
  • Epidemics count toward the deck but give you nothing. Subtract any Epidemics still to come when you count the useful cards left.

For scale: with 4 players at Standard, the deck starts at 50 cards. That is 25 draws and 26 turns in all, or six or seven turns each. It goes faster than it feels.

Can you still cure it? Count the colors

There are 12 City cards of each color. A cure takes 5, or 4 for the Scientist. City cards in the Player discard pile never come back, whether they went to a flight, a station, or the hand limit.

So for every uncured color, count the cards already discarded:

  • 8 gone: only 4 are left anywhere. Only the Scientist can still cure it.
  • 9 or more gone: that disease cannot be cured, and the game cannot be won.

A worked example. Your last uncured disease is yellow. The collector holds 3 yellow cards, a teammate holds 1, and 5 are in the discard pile. That leaves 3 yellow cards in the Player deck. You need the teammate’s card and one more from the deck, all in the collector’s hand, at a research station, before time runs out. If the deck is nearly empty, the last yellow card may arrive on the very last draw. Plan for that: get the collector and the teammate to the same city, close to a station, before it comes.

Cubes: the quiet way to lose

Each color has 24 cubes. If you need to place cubes of a color and not enough are left, the team loses at once.

This loss sneaks up on teams, because an outbreak places 1 cube on every connected city, and a chain reaction places more. When a color’s supply is down to a handful, one bad Infect step can empty it. Look at the supply, not just the board.

Two things shrink the risk. A cure makes that color fast to clean up. Eradication stops its cubes for good, though it is only worth chasing when few cubes are left.

Outbreaks: know your budget

The 8th outbreak loses the game. With the marker at 6, the team is two outbreaks from losing, and a single chain reaction can cause both at once. Late in the game the infection rate is higher too, so more cards flip each turn.

Before the last few turns, list every city at 3 cubes and check two things: is its card on top of the Infection deck, and is it next to another city at 3? Those are the cities that can end the game.

When to stop treating

Late in the game, every action should point at the last cures. Treat a city only if an outbreak there before the end would cost you the game, by reaching 8 outbreaks or by emptying a cube supply. Everything else can wait, because the game ends when you win.

Spend everything

An Event card still in hand when the game ends did nothing. In the last turns:

  • Airlift the collector to a research station.
  • Build a station where the collector already stands with Government Grant.
  • Use One Quiet Night to skip an Infect step that would cause an outbreak.
  • If the Contingency Planner is holding an Event, use it.

A last-round checklist

When the deck gets low, count together:

  1. How many turns are left? (Cards in the deck divided by 2, rounded down, plus 1.)
  2. For each uncured color, where are the cards, and are enough left?
  3. Can the collector reach a station with those cards in time?
  4. What could make us lose before then: outbreaks, cubes, or the deck?
