Competitive Terraforming Mars: Tournaments and Local Play

Competitive Terraforming Mars: how tournament games run, the World Boardgaming Championships event, national qualifiers, and where to play online or near you.

Terraforming Mars is a long game, and that shapes its competitive scene. Tournaments run fewer rounds, give each game hours instead of minutes, and often add expansions. You do not need to play in one to enjoy the game. But knowing how they run is a good map for where your own play can go.

How tournament games differ from home play

Events set their own rules, but a few patterns show up again and again:

  • Four-player tables. The World Boardgaming Championships seats four per game where it can, with some three or five-player games as needed. A 2026 qualifier in France also used four-player tables.
  • A time limit. That French qualifier allowed up to two hours per game, plus five minutes for choosing a corporation, Preludes, and starting cards. WBC early rounds had a four-hour limit in 2025.
  • Prelude. It gives every engine a fast start. The French qualifier used the base game and Prelude only, and WBC’s later rounds add it along with other expansions.
  • Drafting. WBC 2025 drafted the starting project cards, drafted every generation from generation 2, and drafted Preludes too.
  • No training wheels. WBC played with the Corporate Era cards, did not allow Beginner Corporations, and banned a few corporations outright.

If you want to practice for an event, Level 3 covers Prelude and the draft, and Level 4 covers Colonies, Venus Next, and the other maps.

The World Boardgaming Championships

The World Boardgaming Championships (WBC) is a yearly tournament convention in Pennsylvania where many games each crown a champion. WBC 2026 ran July 24 to August 1. Terraforming Mars has been an event there since 2017. Its 2019 event drew 256 players, and the 2025 event drew 120. Andrew Martin won in 2024 and 2025, and the 2026 winners list names him again.

The 2025 format, from the event preview:

  • Heats, winners only. Two heats, then a quarterfinal, semifinal, and a four-player final. Only heat winners advance.
  • Different boards each round. The original map, then Hellas, Elysium, Hellas again, and a random board for the final.
  • More expansions as rounds go on. In the heats, expansions depend on what the players at each table ask for. The quarterfinal uses at least two, and the semifinal and final use every expansion except Turmoil, unless all players agree.

The event is marked for experienced players only. That is a fair warning: the field knows the cards and the expansions well. If you plan to enter, learn Prelude, Venus Next, Colonies, and the Hellas and Elysium maps first.

National circuits and qualifiers

We could not find a world championship run by FryxGames or Stronghold Games. FryxGames does list a Swedish Championship for Terraforming Mars on its events page, set for October 2, 2027. Some countries run their own circuits. In France, a qualifier at the Playin store in Marseille on September 5, 2026, was part of the French Championship qualification circuit, with two spots at the national championship up for grabs if 16 players entered.

Many conventions also run one-off Terraforming Mars tournaments, each with its own house rules. Read the event page for player counts, expansions, and time limits before you sign up.

Online play

Board Game Arena has had Terraforming Mars since March 2024. You play in your browser, with options for Corporate Era, Prelude, Colonies, and several maps. The site tracks the rules and the bookkeeping for you, which makes it a good place to learn hundreds of cards without slowing a table down.

There is also a digital edition on Steam, with online multiplayer.

Finding local play

You do not need a tournament to find strong opponents.

  • Your local game store. Many run open game nights. Terraforming Mars needs a long evening, so ask about weekend afternoons.
  • BoardGameGeek. Its local guilds and forums list game groups near you.
  • Your library or community center. Many host board game meetups.
  • Start your own. Our guide on how to start a play group walks through it.

If you are near Indianapolis, join the Indianapolis list for first word on local learn-to-play nights as The Ludarium grows.

How to practice like a competitor

  • Play four-player games with Prelude and the draft. All three show up in the events above.
  • Play on a clock now and then. Two hours for a four-player game forces faster reads.
  • Score by category. After each game, split your total into TR, map, milestones and awards, and cards. Your weakest category is your next lesson.
  • Review your switch. Find the generation you stopped building and started scoring. Was it too late?

That is the map. The next two lessons get you ready to sit down at one of these tables: first the tournament rules and procedure, then a practice plan to get your game where it needs to be.
