Best D&D Starter Set Gift: Which Box to Give a New Player

Which D&D starter set to gift someone new: Heroes of the Borderlands vs Dragons of Stormwreck Isle, what each costs, and what to add so it gets played.

A D&D starter set gift is one of the few presents that can start a weekly tradition. It is also one that can end up unopened, because the recipient did not know what to do next. The difference is usually not the box. It is whether anyone at the table is willing to be the Dungeon Master.

At the time of writing, Wizards of the Coast has two Dungeons & Dragons starter sets on the market, at very different prices and built for very different tables. This guide explains which to give, who it fits, and the two small additions that turn the box into a game night.

The quick answer: give Heroes of the Borderlands (about $45 to $55) to almost any new group, especially board gamers and families. Give Dragons of Stormwreck Isle (list price $19.99) only if you can find it in stock and the recipient wants a traditional campaign on a budget.

Prices are approximate at the time of writing and will move in November. Product names link to Amazon where it had the item in stock.

Which D&D starter sets can you buy in 2026?

Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set: Heroes of the Borderlands is the newest, released in September 2025 and built for the 2024 rules. It launched at $49.99, per EN World’s coverage of the price announcement. It is a big box: three adventure booklets, eight class boards for building characters from cards and tiles, nine double-sided poster maps, over 200 cards, over 270 tokens, and eleven dice.

Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle is the 2022 set built for the 2014 rules. It is a thin box with a rulebook, a single campaign adventure, five pregenerated character sheets, and a set of dice. Its list price is $19.99, but it is getting hard to find, and several US retailers showed it out of stock at the time of writing.

Both are complete: a group can open either box and play without buying anything else. The question is which kind of group.

Reviewers broadly agree on the trade. RPGBOT’s review calls Heroes of the Borderlands worth it for groups of mostly new players, especially board gamers, and lists the higher price and the lack of a connecting story as the main downsides. Stormwreck Isle is the traditional approach: read the rulebook, hand out character sheets, run a campaign cover to cover.

Which D&D starter set should you give?

Give Heroes of the Borderlands if any of these are true:

  • The recipient has played modern board games but never a role-playing game.
  • The gift is for a family or a friend group, not one person.
  • Nobody in the group has been a Dungeon Master. The scenarios are short and the DM guidance sits right in the booklets, which lowers the bar for whoever volunteers.
  • You want the box itself to feel like a present. It does.

Give Dragons of Stormwreck Isle if:

  • The recipient is a reader who has watched actual-play shows and wants to learn properly.
  • Budget is under $20 and you can find a copy at list price.
  • Someone in their group already plays and can run it.
  • You know they will want to move on to the full rulebooks soon. Character sheets are how they will keep playing.

If you have no information at all, give Heroes of the Borderlands. The extra $25 to $30 buys a much better chance that the box gets opened and played the same week, and it fits in our list of board game gifts under $50. We have written a longer piece on how to play D&D for beginners that pairs well with either box.

What should you add to a D&D starter set?

The starter set is complete, but two cheap additions change the odds that it becomes a habit.

A second set of dice. Each box includes one set of dice. At a table of four or five, dice get passed and the game slows. A set of polyhedral dice, such as a basic Chessex seven-die set, runs about $4 to $15 at the time of writing, and giving every player their own is a small ceremony that makes the first session feel like an occasion.

A promise to run the first session, or a link to someone who will. This is the real gift. A common reason starter sets go unplayed is that nobody wants to be the Dungeon Master. If you can run session one, write that on the card. If you cannot, help them find a drop-in game at a local store or a D&D group near them. Many game stores run learn-to-play tables; ask at the counter.

Nice but optional:

  • A wet-erase battle mat (about $20 to $30; Chessex’s reversible Battlemat is about $28 at the time of writing) if they got Stormwreck Isle, which has no maps.
  • A folding DM screen (about $16 to $20; the official 2024 screen lists at $19.99 at the time of writing). Mostly theater, but new DMs like having a wall to hide behind.
  • Pencils. Dozens. They vanish.

What about the Essentials Kit and other beginner boxes?

The D&D Essentials Kit (2019) was a middle option with a DM screen, a longer adventure, and rules for playing with just one player and one DM. It is built for the 2014 rules and has been hard to find since the 2024 edition arrived. Its list price is $24.99. If you see it at or under list, it remains a good gift for a pair.

Other publishers make excellent beginner boxes too. The Pathfinder Beginner Box is the most common alternative and is a more rules-heavy game. Its newest edition, Secrets of the Unlit Star, lists at $49.99 at the time of writing. Our D&D vs Pathfinder for beginners comparison explains the difference. For a complete newcomer who asked for “D&D,” give them D&D. The name on the box matters to a beginner. If they asked for something simpler, our list of easy tabletop RPGs for beginners has eight lighter systems, and the free RPG Demo Library lets them try a short intro adventure of other games first.

Is a D&D starter set a good gift for a kid?

Yes, from about age ten with an adult willing to run it, and from twelve or thirteen for a group of friends on their own. Heroes of the Borderlands is the better kid gift: the tokens, maps, and cards give young players something to hold, and the short scenarios fit an after-school window. The reading level of Stormwreck Isle’s rulebook is a stretch for younger kids without help.

Why give a D&D starter set at all?

A D&D starter set is a box of permission. It says: you and four friends are allowed to sit at a table every other Thursday, turn your phones face down, and make up a story together for three hours. Many adults have not given themselves that permission in years. Many kids have never had it.

The dice and maps are props. The game is the reason. The people are the point.

FAQ

What is the best D&D starter set for beginners?

Heroes of the Borderlands (2025), for most new groups. It costs about $45 to $55 at the time of writing, uses the current rules, and is designed so that nobody needs prior experience to run it.

Is Dragons of Stormwreck Isle still worth buying?

Yes, if you can find it at or near its $19.99 list price and the recipient wants a traditional campaign with character sheets. It was out of stock at D&D Beyond and several US retailers at the time of writing.

Does a D&D starter set include everything you need?

Both current sets include rules, an adventure, characters, and dice. Add a second set of dice and pencils. Heroes of the Borderlands also includes maps and tokens; Stormwreck Isle does not.

Do you need a Dungeon Master to use a starter set?

Yes. One player runs the game. Heroes of the Borderlands makes this easier with short scenarios and guidance in the booklets, but someone still has to volunteer.
