I opened Moonshot Games’ event calendar this week to book a table for a Cube Commonwealth session in Noblesville on Saturday. The table was taken. Moonshot is hosting an official Catan tournament that day, a CATAN Championship qualifier, and my first reaction was mild annoyance: no cube on Saturday.

My second reaction was curiosity. I have played Catan a handful of times, always casually, always with a snack bowl within reach. It is a fun game. And the entry fee is $10. For the price of a sandwich, I get a seat at a table full of people who take sheep and brick seriously, and a front-row look at what “good” means in a game most of us learned at a friend’s kitchen table.

So I did what I always do before jumping into something: I went down the rabbit hole. Here is what I found about where Catan came from, how its competitive scene works, and what the word “qualifier” on the event page really means.

Where did Catan come from?

Catan began as an escape. Klaus Teuber ran a dental lab in Darmstadt, Germany, and designed games in his spare time to get away from a job he did not love. He had already won Germany’s Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) three times before Catan, which made him one of the country’s biggest design names by the early 1990s (Opinionated Gamers).

Kosmos published Die Siedler von Catan (The Settlers of Catan) in 1995. The first print run of 5,000 sold out so fast that Teuber never kept a first edition, and the game moved roughly 400,000 copies in its first year. It swept that year’s major German awards, including the Spiel des Jahres. By 1998 it earned enough for Teuber to leave dentistry and design full time (Wikipedia).

The English-language story ran through Mayfair Games, which published Catan in North America from 1996. In January 2016, Asmodee acquired the English rights and formed a dedicated company, Catan Studio, which now runs the game and its organized play in English-speaking countries (Wikipedia). Teuber died on April 1, 2023, at age 70. His family company, Catan GmbH, still steers the brand.

How did Catan change the board game industry?

  • It was the gateway. For a generation of American players, Catan was the first board game that was not Monopoly, Risk, or Scrabble. The board changes every game, nobody gets eliminated, and scores stay close, so new players stay engaged to the last roll (NPR via KUOW). If you are deciding between the two big gateway games, our Catan vs Ticket to Ride comparison covers it.
  • It proved a European-style strategy game could sell at mass scale. Catan has sold more than 40 million copies in over 40 languages. U.S. sales grew from about 100,000 units by 2004 to more than 600,000 by 2008, right as game stores and board game cafés started to multiply.
  • It turned one game into a franchise. Seafarers, Cities & Knights, licensed editions, digital versions. Catan helped make the expansion line normal, and most Spiel des Jahres winners since have gone on to get expansions.
  • It made trading and table talk the heart of the game. The best Catan moments happen between players, not on the board.

The game turned 30 in 2025. To mark it, KOSMOS staged a record-setting game at SPIEL Essen with more than 1,100 people playing on one connected island.

Is there a Catan World Championship?

Yes. Organized Catan tournaments started in Germany in the late 1990s, and the first official CATAN World Championship was held in 2002. It has run every two years since 2008 (catan.com). More than 40 nations have sent players.

2022Valletta, MaltaHamish Dean (New Zealand)
2018Cologne, GermanyQuetzal Hernandez (Mexico)
2016Durango, Colorado, USAWilliam Cavaretta (USA)

The 2025 event moved from 2024 to line up with Catan’s 30th anniversary. About 90 players from 60 countries and regions met in Stuttgart, the city where KOSMOS first published the game (catan.com). The next World Championship is set for 2027.

In the off-years, continental events fill the gap. The CATAN Americas Championship debuted in Oaxaca, Mexico, in 2019. The 2026 edition in Brazil went to Burak Ozgur, the 2025 U.S. National Champion (catan.com).

In the U.S., Catan Studio also runs the Masters Invitational, an annual invite-only event for anyone who has placed in the top 16 at a past National Championship. It is one of the toughest Catan fields anywhere, and it doubles as a second road into Nationals (CATAN Events).

The top of the game is a mix of math minds, content creators, and grinders. Hamish Dean, the 2022 world champion, holds a PhD in mathematics and was described as a “good talker” in his hometown paper, which is about the best two-word summary of Catan skill I have heard (Otago Daily Times). Drew Elliott, the 2024 U.S. champion, is a well-known Catan content creator. This year Andrew Scott won the Masters Invitational and then the U.S. National Championship in Chicago, the first Nationals ever run as a public, spectator event (catan.com).

What does “Catan qualifier” mean?

A local qualifier is the bottom rung of a four-step ladder, and only the person who finishes first moves up. Win Saturday’s event and you earn a seat at the Knight Regional Preliminary, the Midwest bracket that Indiana belongs to, in summer 2027 (CATAN Events).

  1. Local Qualifier. Hosted by stores, conventions, and fan groups. Three or four games, then a final table. Only the winner advances.
  2. Regional Preliminary. Four games, with players who have zero wins cut after game 3. First place is the Regional Champion and gets a bye to the Nationals semifinal. Places 2 through 13 are invited to the Nationals quarterfinal.
  3. U.S. National Championship. New for 2027, it grows to 52 players. The three Regional Champions and the top U.S. player from the Masters Invitational go straight to the semifinal. Everyone else plays a 48-player quarterfinal for the last 12 semifinal seats. The four semifinal winners play one final game for the title.
  4. International play. Only national champions reach the World Championship. Andrew Scott will represent the U.S. in 2027. Saturday’s event page says the 2027 U.S. champion’s international invitation is still to be announced.

The U.S. has three regions: Merchant (West), Knight (Midwest), and Pirate (East). Once you win a local, you cannot enter more locals in that region this season, but you can try to qualify in the other two. Each Regional Champion also gets a travel voucher or stipend for the trip to Nationals.

What will Saturday at Moonshot look like?

The Moonshot Qualifier is an official local qualifier on the U.S. 2026-2027 circuit, run by organizer Josh Kozicki. It is a return visit, so this is not the store’s first Catan tournament.

Under the official CATAN tournament rules, event size sets the format. With 12 to 28 players, everyone plays three preliminary games, and the top four meet at one final table. At 29 or more, the top 16 after three games play semifinals, and the four semifinal winners play the final.

Standings rank wins first. Ties break on total victory points across your games, then on VP percentage (your points divided by everyone’s points at your table). So a 9-point loss is worth far more than a 5-point loss. Every point counts, even in a game you cannot win.

Which tournament rules surprise casual Catan players?

  • No friendly robber. The robber is live from the first turn.
  • Same map for everyone. Organizers set one board per round, the same at every table, with no port tokens. You get 5 minutes to study it before anyone places.
  • Timed placements. Each opening settlement gets 2 minutes, or 3 minutes for a double placement.
  • A clock on your turns. The recommended setup is a 90-second turn timer plus a 10-minute time bank. Judges can also enforce roughly 2-minute turns once a game passes the one-hour mark.
  • Your hand stays hidden. You must say how many cards you hold if asked, but showing your actual cards earns a warning and then a penalty.
  • No free cards. Trades must be real trades. Gifting a resource, or a chain of trades that nets someone a free card, counts as collusion.
  • Off-turn offers are fine, but nothing is binding. Players waiting for their turn can float trade ideas while the active player deals.
  • Claim your win on your turn. Hit 10 points and forget to say so, and you wait a full round.
  • No AI help. Using AI software at the table is banned outright.

Why I’m signing up anyway

I am not going to win on Saturday. The people across the table will have studied opening placements the way cube drafters study pick orders. That is the point. Ten dollars buys me three or four games against players who think about this game far harder than I do, and there is no faster way to find out what you do not know.

It also scratches the same itch that built Cube Commonwealth: a room full of people who love a game enough to show up on a Saturday and play it seriously, together. A qualifier is togethering with a scoresheet. The game is the reason. The people are the point.
