Competitive Ark Nova: Reading Opponents and Tournaments

Ark Nova has a reputation as a game where everyone builds their own zoo and barely looks up. Watch a strong player and you will see the opposite. They glance at every rival’s action row before choosing their own. This lesson is about that glance: what is shared, how to read each kind of opponent, and where to test yourself once your home table is not enough.

What is shared at the table?

• The display. Six cards everyone wants. Snapping takes any one of them, and every break clears folders 1 and 2.
• Partner zoos and universities. Only one of each is on offer at a time, until the next break.
• Project levels. Each level holds one token. First come, first served.
• The project card row. A new project card pushes the oldest one off when the row is full. If a rival was building toward that project and had not supported it yet, it is gone.
• The Bonus tiles at 5 and 8 conservation, one each.
• The clock. Anyone can push the Break token, and anyone can trigger the end.

Read their action row

Every action row is public, and it tells you what each rival can do next:

• Cards in slot 5: they can snap any card from the display. If a card matters to both of you, take it first.
• Association in slot 5: a project level may vanish this turn.
• Animals in slot 5 with money in hand: a big appeal turn is coming.
• Sponsors high and money low: they may push the break to get paid.

Playing against the appeal leader

Some animals reach into other zoos. None of them can touch a zoo with less than 5 appeal.

• Venom hits every zoo with more appeal than yours. It puts tokens on their lowest slots. A player who ends a turn without clearing one, while one remains, pays 2 money.
• Constriction hits every zoo ahead of yours on appeal, conservation, or both. It puts tokens on their highest slots, and each token cuts that action by 2 strength.
• Hypnosis targets the zoo with the highest appeal. You perform one action from their slot 1, 2, or 3.
• Pilfering targets the highest appeal, and at Pilfering 2 also the most conservation. That player chooses: give you 5 money or let you draw a random card from their hand.

Venom and Constriction tokens leave at the next break. If your group would rather skip the sting, the rulebook lets you use each card’s solo effect instead.

Other kinds of rivals

The conservation racer. Watch their icon counts against the open project levels, and claim the level they need when you can. If they will reach 10 first, decide early which Final Scoring card you will keep.

The card collector. A big hand is a big plan. Pushing the break clears the display’s bottom two cards and makes them discard down to 3.

Two players or four. With two, blocked levels and a shorter project card row make every race sharper. With four, the display changes a lot between your turns, so a card you want now rarely waits.

The World Boardgaming Championships

The World Boardgaming Championships in Pennsylvania ran its fourth Ark Nova tournament in 2026. Per the 2026 event preview, it was listed for experienced players, with two heats, then a quarterfinal, semifinal, and final, in 3-hour rounds at four-player tables. Heat winners advanced. In the heats, players chose from a set of advanced zoo maps in reverse turn order, and scoring used the official change that adds 100.

The 2026 winners list names Richard Miller as Ark Nova champion. The 2025 report counted 113 players, and Jonathan Naylor won.

The 2027 world championship

Feuerland Spiele has announced an Ark Nova world championship in Berlin on July 9 and 10, 2027. Four qualified players will play several games to crown the champion. The four seats come from:

• The World Series of Board Gaming in Las Vegas. Andrew Law took the first seat by winning its Ark Nova Ring event on September 5, 2026.
• The Ark Nova Digital Championship Series, with four monthly qualifiers: October 29 to November 1, November 12 to 15, and December 10 to 13, 2026, then January 14 to 17, 2027. The four qualifier winners meet in a streamed final, and its champion goes to Berlin.
• Board Game Arena, where the best players of Season 27 (October 2026 to January 2027) from the Western and Eastern Hemispheres are invited.

Expansions and maps

Once the base game feels familiar, Capstone sells two kinds of additions. Ark Nova: Marine Worlds adds sea animals and aquariums, a new university, alternate action cards, and new Final Scoring cards and Bonus tiles. It needs the base game. The WBC heats made room for Marine Worlds players too.

For new zoo maps, Zoo Map Pack 1 adds maps 9 and 10, and Zoo Map Pack 2 adds five layouts, including the 2024 World Series of Board Gaming tournament map.

• Play four-player games online. That is the tournament format.
• Move to the advanced zoo maps, and practice choosing one from two.
• After each game, find the turn where your row let you down, and replay it in your head.
