A strong home group might play Ark Nova once or twice a month. A player chasing the top can play that many in a day online. Volume is not everything, but it is where patterns become instinct. And for the 2026 to 2027 season, online play is also a direct path to the world championship.
The two main platforms
Board Game Arena runs Ark Nova in the browser for 1 to 4 players, with the Marine Worlds rules included on its game page. Board Game Arena runs ranked play with seasons, and the current season is part of the championship path below.
Ark Nova Digital, from Dire Wolf, offers solo play against an AI, online games, and pass and play. Its Championship Series is another path to the world championship.
The championship seats online
Feuerland Spiele’s world championship page lists four seats for the July 9 and 10, 2027 final in Berlin. One went to Andrew Law at the World Series of Board Gaming. The others come online:
- The Ark Nova Digital Championship Series: four monthly qualifiers, each over two days: October 29 to November 1, November 12 to 15, December 10 to 13, and January 14 to 17. The four qualifier winners meet in a streamed final, and its winner earns the invitation.
- Board Game Arena Season 27, October 2026 to January 2027: the best players from two regions are invited. The page defines a Western Hemisphere of the Americas, Africa, and Europe, and an Eastern Hemisphere covering the rest of the world.
The page says the four qualifiers receive a flight to Berlin and hotel accommodation for the main event.
Real-time or turn-based?
Board Game Arena offers both real-time tables, where everyone plays in one sitting, and turn-based tables, where each player has a longer window per move.
- Real-time trains the tournament skill: deciding under a clock while others wait. WBC rounds run 3 hours at four-player tables, so practice finishing on time.
- Turn-based is good for deep thinking. Use it to work through hard positions slowly, then bring the habits to real-time.
A mix is healthy. If your goal is an event, lean toward real-time four-player games.
Ranked play etiquette
Ranked play means real stakes for everyone at the table. A few habits keep it good:
- Finish what you start. Leaving a game ruins it for three people.
- Keep your turns moving. Plan during others’ turns, as the action cards lesson suggests.
- Be kind in chat. A short “good game” costs nothing, and the same players will be at your tables for months.
Reviewing games
The fastest way to improve is to review your own losses. Online play makes this easy, because the game keeps a full log and, on Board Game Arena, a replay.
After each loss, answer four questions:
- Where did my row let me down? Find a turn where the action you wanted sat at the wrong strength.
- Which break hurt me? Who triggered it, and what did I carry into it?
- Which project level did I lose a race for? Could I have taken it a turn earlier?
- How big was the winner’s final turn, and did I see it coming?
Write the answers in one line each. After ten games, the same answer will keep showing up. That is your next thing to fix.
Watching strong players
Board Game Arena lets you watch games and replays of top players. Pick a strong player and watch one full game, pausing before each of their turns to guess their action. Count how often you match. It is the same reading skill the competitive play lesson teaches, done at speed.
Keeping the people in view
Online games are still games with people. The best part of a long ranked season is the regulars you meet, who often become the friends you travel with to a convention. Our guide on how to start a play group works for online groups too.
