Studying Castles of Burgundy Online: Ranked Play and Replays

How to study Castles of Burgundy online: ranked games on Board Game Arena, replays of strong players' games, same-duchy tables, and a simple review of a loss.

You know the rules, the strategy, and the tournament landscape. The championship path is about getting better faster than games alone would make you. The tools for that are online, and most of them are free. This lesson shows how to use them as a study plan rather than just a place to play.

Ranked play as a measuring stick

Board Game Arena runs The Castles of Burgundy in the browser for 2 to 4 players, with both the first edition and the 2019 edition rules available. Its ranked games give each player a rating for the game that rises and falls with results.

A rating is a useful measuring stick, with two cautions:

  • It moves slowly and noisily. Look at the trend over dozens of games, not the change after one.
  • Settings matter. Player count, edition, and duchy setup all change the game. For tournament practice, play four-player games under the 2019 edition rules, which match the current box.

Replays: the best free teacher

Board Game Arena keeps a replay of finished games, so you can watch a game again move by move. You can open your own from your profile, and finished games of other players are reachable from their profiles and the game’s results.

Use replays two ways.

Your own losses. Go back to the start of each phase and ask what you planned and what happened instead.

Stronger players’ wins. Pick a player whose rating is well above yours, and open a game they won. At the start of each phase, pause and guess their plan from the depots and their duchy. Then watch. The moments where your guess is wrong are the lessons.

What to look for in a strong player’s game

Watch the same few things every time, so patterns stand out:

  1. Phase A. How many regions did they close, and how big? Which income did they build: mines, a monastery, workers?
  2. Monastery choices. Which did they take, and when? Did they take rule changers early and scorers late, as the monastery lesson suggests?
  3. Worker balance. How many workers did they hold at the start of each turn? Strong players rarely sit at zero.
  4. Ships and the bridge. When did they ship, and what did they gain in turn order?
  5. The last two rounds. How many leftovers did they end with? Usually very few.

Same duchy, clean comparisons

Board Game Arena has a setup option that gives every player the same randomly chosen duchy. Use it for study games. When everyone faces the same board, the final scores compare cleanly, and the winner’s choices are a direct answer key for yours.

A simple loss review

After a loss, write three lines. Not a page; three lines.

  1. Where did the points go? Compare your score with the winner’s by source: regions, livestock, goods, bonus tiles, leftovers. The biggest gap is the place to look.
  2. What was the turning point? Usually one phase, one missed tile, or one race lost by a turn.
  3. What would I do differently? One change, specific enough to try next game.

Keep the notes together. After ten games, read them in a row. The mistakes you made three times are the ones to fix first.

Watch, then play

Watching recorded top-level games also helps. The Dice Tower posted the 2025 World Series of Board Gaming ring final for this game, which shows a four-player table under tournament pressure. Watch it with the same five questions above.

Keep the people in it

Online study is solitary, and tournaments are not. Mix in games with friends, across a real table or on a call. Our guide to playing with long-distance friends covers regular games with people far away, and starting a play group covers the ones nearby.
