Most cures in Pandemic are not drawn. They are built, one shared card at a time. Teams that lose to the Player deck usually had the cards. The cards were just in the wrong hands, in the wrong cities, at the wrong time. This lesson is about fixing that.
The rule that shapes everything
Share Knowledge moves only the City card that matches the city both players are standing in. Both must agree. You can give that card or, on your turn, take it. The rulebook makes one exception: the Researcher may give any City card from her hand, and a player sharing with her on their own turn may take any one of her City cards.
Read that rule backward and it becomes a plan. The card decides the meeting place. If your teammate holds the Lagos card and the collector needs it, the meeting is in Lagos. Not near Lagos. In Lagos.
One collector per color
Split cards spread thin. Five yellow cards held by three players is not a cure. It is three meetings.
- Name one collector for each color the team is working on. The Scientist is the natural first choice.
- Two collectors on two different colors can work at once. Two players gathering the same color slow each other down.
- Everyone else’s job is to feed the collectors. When you draw a card of their color, the question is not whether to pass it, but where and when.
Planning a meeting a turn ahead
A share that happens this turn was usually planned last turn. A simple three-step check:
- Which card? Name the card the collector needs and who holds it.
- Which city? That card’s city, unless the Researcher is involved.
- Who moves? Count the actions each player needs to reach that city. Often one player spends their whole turn travelling, and the other arrives and shares on the next turn.
A few things make meetings much cheaper:
- A research station in the meeting city. Then the collector can share and cure in the same turn, if they reach 5 cards.
- Shuttle Flights. Two players anywhere on the station network can meet at a station in one action each.
- The closest card. If the giver holds two or three cards the collector needs, start with the one whose city is nearest to both pawns.
Using the Researcher well
With the Researcher in the game, the meeting place stops mattering. Any city where she and the collector both stand will do. So keep her close to the collector. Two pawns travelling together, or one station apart, can pass a card almost every turn.
A useful order: whoever is closest to a cure holds the most cards of that color. The Researcher gathers the rest and hands them over when they meet. It is the closest Pandemic comes to a production line.
The Dispatcher and Airlift shortcuts
- The Dispatcher can, as an action, move any pawn to a city that already has another pawn in it, with the owner’s permission. That is a one-action meeting.
- Airlift moves any pawn to any city, also with permission, and costs no action at all.
Save these for the meeting that finishes a cure. A one-action share that saves the team a whole turn is worth more than almost any other use.
The hand limit trap
The 7-card hand limit applies the moment you receive a card, not just at the end of your turn. A collector who is handed an eighth card must discard or play an Event right away.
Two habits avoid the trap:
- Cure before the hand fills. A collector at 6 cards should be heading for a station.
- Discard in the right order. Cured colors first. Then colors nobody is collecting. Never a card of a color with few cards left in the game. There are only 12 of each.
Counting what is left
Before you plan a cure, count. For the color you want, add the cards in hands to the cards still in the Player deck. If 4 have already been discarded, there are 8 left in the game; the collector needs 5 of them (4 for the Scientist). The endgame lesson turns this into a full countdown.
Sharing with hands closed
In Standard and Heroic games, the rules have players keep their cards private. That does not stop anyone from saying what they hold. A short round at the start of each turn, where everyone names the colors and counts in their hand, is often enough to plan the next share. The team planning lesson covers how to run that conversation without one player taking over.
Plan shares backward from the city on the card, and the deck stops running out before you are ready.
