Competitive Splendor: Tournaments and Local Play

Competitive Splendor: the official tournament format, the World Boardgaming Championships event, online play on Board Game Arena, and how to find local games.

Splendor looks like a quiet family game, and it is one. It is also a tournament game, with an official event format from its publisher, a long-running championship at the World Boardgaming Championships, and a busy online scene. You do not need to enter any of them. But knowing how competitive play works sharpens how you play at home.

How tournament Splendor differs from home play

Space Cowboys publishes a tournament guide for organizers. It is currently in French. The main points:

  • Normal rules. The game itself does not change.
  • A 45-minute limit. When time runs out, the game ends at once and points are counted.
  • Three or more players per table. Two-player tournaments are left to Splendor Duel.
  • Swiss rounds are recommended. Each round, players with similar results meet. Single elimination is suggested for top tables and finals.
  • Points by place. With X players at a table, 1st scores X+3, 2nd X+1, 3rd X-1, and 4th X-3. At a four-player table, that is 7, 5, 3, and 1.
  • Notes are allowed. Each player may keep a rules summary or notes, up to one sheet, both sides.

Standings break ties by comparing each player’s score with their table winner’s. If the organizer runs a final, the top four after the Swiss rounds play one more game, starting from zero.

The World Boardgaming Championships

The World Boardgaming Championships (WBC) is an annual tournament convention in Pennsylvania where many games each crown a champion. Splendor has been one of them for years. In 2015, its event drew 272 entrants across three heats. The 2026 convention ran July 24 to August 1, and Chris Wildes won Splendor, according to the 2026 winners list.

The 2026 event page lays out the format:

  • Three heats, then a quarterfinal, semifinal, and final. Each round is one hour.
  • Four-player games in the heats and quarterfinal; three-player games in the semifinal and final.
  • Most wins advances. Winning two or more heats guarantees a quarterfinal seat. Ties in the standings go to placement points across your heats.
  • A tied game goes to the player with the fewest development cards, as in the rulebook, then to the later seat.
  • Beginning players welcome. The event is marked that way, which makes it a friendly first tournament.

Splendor Duel had its own WBC event in 2026 as well.

The World Series of Board Gaming

The World Series of Board Gaming in Las Vegas runs championship “ring” tournaments, and Splendor has been one of them. The Dice Tower streamed its 2024 Splendor World Championship final. The 2027 event is set for September 24 to 28, 2027.

Online play

Board Game Arena has Splendor free in your browser for 2 to 4 players, with an Elo rating that tracks your results. Its competitor mode turns off helpers such as highlighting the cards you can afford, which is good practice for the table.

BGA has hosted official play too. In May 2021 it ran the official worldwide Splendor tournament, with thanks to Asmodee and Space Cowboys, and invited the top eight to a live tournament. Player-run events continue: the Splendor Japan GP 2026, open to players who live in Japan, runs on BGA this autumn.

Finding local play

You do not need a tournament to find good opponents.

  • Your local game store. Space Cowboys links to Asmodee’s store locator. Many stores run open game nights where Splendor is a regular. Ask the staff. If your store wants to run a Splendor tournament, the official guide above is free.
  • BoardGameGeek. Its forums and local guilds list game groups near you.
  • Your library or community center. Many host board game meetups, and Splendor is a common choice because it teaches fast.
  • Start your own. Our guide on how to start a play group walks through it, and how to run a board game tournament covers Swiss rounds for a game like Splendor.

How to practice like a competitor

  • Play three and four players. That is what tournament tables seat.
  • Play on a clock. Forty-five minutes for the whole game, as the official guide sets, keeps you from stalling.
  • Count your turns. Track how many turns you take to reach 15. Fewer is better, and the number shows whether your opening is improving.
  • Review your losses. Which card did someone take before you could buy it? Which noble did you miss by one turn? Who did you let have the last turn?

You now know where competitive Splendor happens and how it is scored. The final lesson turns that into a plan for the weeks before your first event.
