Gen Con Hotels: The Housing Lottery, Explained

Gen Con hotels explained: the housing portal and random access times, the downtown four-night rule, deposits, and what to do if you land in the suburbs.

Gen Con hotels are the one part of the show that frustrates experienced attendees more than first-timers. Tens of thousands of people want a few thousand downtown rooms for the same four nights, and Gen Con’s answer is a housing portal with randomly assigned access times, strict minimum stays, and non-refundable deposits. People call it the housing lottery. Gen Con does not use the word, but the odds feel like one.

This guide explains the system as Gen Con publishes it, then covers what to do with the result you get.

How does the Gen Con housing portal work?

The rules come from Gen Con’s housing and travel page and its help center.

You need a badge first, and you need to be the purchaser. Only the account that bought a badge can request a room. Gen Con is specific: badge purchasers, not badge holders, request rooms. If a friend bought your badge, your friend books the hotel.

Housing opens a couple of weeks after badges. For 2026, badges went on sale February 8 and housing opened February 22. Expect similar timing each year.

Access is staggered at random. Everyone who bought a badge by the cutoff gets a random access time to the portal on opening day, shown as a countdown on the My Housing page. Gen Con says scheduled access is required to distribute initial opening server demand. Badges bought after the cutoff get access once the opening queue has been processed. This is the “lottery”: an early time means downtown choices, a late time means the suburbs.

Rooms are not held until checkout. Inventory is real time. Once you select a room, it is held for ten minutes while you complete the request.

Room limits. You can request one room for every one to two badges on your account. Three or four badges allow two rooms.

Downtown has a minimum stay. Requests for downtown hotels must cover four or more consecutive nights including Wednesday through Saturday. The Indianapolis Marriott Downtown requires five nights, Tuesday through Saturday. Suburban hotels generally do not have these restrictions.

The deposit is real. After housing registration closes, your hotel charges a non-refundable deposit equal to one night’s room rate plus tax. Cancellation fees apply once a booking is confirmed, and Gen Con warns that filing a credit card chargeback to dodge them cancels all your room assignments.

Age. Many Indianapolis hotels now require guests to be 21. The portal cannot check this, so under-21 attendees should confirm with the hotel.

What are the hotel tiers, in practice?

Gen Con’s block covers a lot of ground. Attendees sort it roughly like this.

TierWhat it meansWho gets it
ConnectedHotels linked to the convention center by skywalkThe earliest access times, and people booking far in advance
Downtown walkableWithin about a mile of the center, no skywalkEarly-to-middle access times
Near downtown, shuttle or short driveA few miles out, often with a Gen Con or hotel shuttleMiddle access times
Suburban15 to 30 minutes out, drive or rideshare, cheapest, no minimum stayLater access times, and people who choose price over proximity

The connected hotels are the prize because you can drop off a game, change shoes, or nap between events without leaving the building. The suburban hotels are where most people actually stay, and the weekend is still good.

What should you do before opening day?

A short list that improves your odds.

  1. Buy badges early, on one account. The whole group’s badges on one account means one person requests rooms for everyone, and the account qualifies for more rooms.
  2. Decide your priorities in advance. Rank: connected, then specific walkable hotels, then specific shuttle hotels. Write the list down. You will have ten minutes per selection and no time to debate.
  3. Know your group’s real nights. The downtown four-night rule starts Wednesday. If half your group arrives Thursday, a downtown room still bills from Wednesday.
  4. Be at your computer at your access time with a card that works. Have the second-choice list open.
  5. If your time is late, do not despair. Rooms open up constantly. Which brings us to the next section.

What do you do when you get a bad draw?

Most people get a suburban hotel in the first round. Here is the playbook.

Book what you can, immediately. A confirmed suburban room is a floor, not a ceiling. You can keep looking.

Check the portal often. Between opening day and the cancellation deadline, people adjust plans, downgrade, and cancel. Rooms return to inventory at random hours, and a room you start to book is held for ten minutes during checkout, so a late cancellation can be someone else’s downtown room within the hour. Set reminders.

Watch for room-swap communities. Gen Con attendees have long run informal forums and groups to pass along rooms they no longer need; the official Gen Con forums are the place to start. Be careful: never pay someone outside the hotel or the portal for a reservation.

Book a backup outside the block. Some downtown and near-downtown hotels keep rooms outside the Gen Con block at higher rates with regular cancellation terms. If you can afford the premium, a refundable backup lets you keep hunting in the block without risk.

Consider the suburbs on purpose. A hotel 15 minutes out with free parking, free breakfast, and a shuttle, split four ways, can cost less per night than one downtown parking space. The 15 minutes each way becomes the day’s quiet time. For a full cost comparison, see Gen Con on a budget.

What are the common mistakes?

  • Requesting a downtown room for Thursday to Sunday. The portal will not take it. Downtown needs Wednesday through Saturday at minimum.
  • Forgetting the deposit. One night plus tax, charged by the hotel, non-refundable. Budget it.
  • Booking three rooms “just in case.” You cannot, beyond the badge-based limit, and holding rooms you will not use is why the lottery exists.
  • Assuming your friend can book for you. Only the badge purchaser’s account requests rooms.
  • Driving downtown without a parking plan. Garages fill and prices climb during Gen Con. Shuttle hotels avoid this entirely.
  • Not reading the cancellation terms. The deadline and fee schedule are set out when you book. Put the date in your calendar.

Is the lottery fair?

It is random, which is a kind of fair. The system favors people who buy badges early and know the rules, which is a kind of unfair. Gen Con introduced the randomized, scheduled access queue to spread server load and avoid the time-outs and crashes of the old first-come rush, and the current staggered version is calmer than what longtime attendees remember.

What it cannot do is make more downtown rooms. Gen Con has sold out before opening three years running and topped 74,000 attendees in 2026; the 2027 show gets an expanded convention center and an 800-room Signia by Hilton, which will help but not fix it. Until that changes, the suburbs are part of the show for most people.

If you are new, the first-timer’s guide puts housing in context with badges and events. If you are within driving distance, consider skipping the problem entirely and reading Gen Con for locals.

The game is the reason. The people are the point. Nobody remembers which hotel they stayed in. Everyone remembers who they played with at 1 a.m. in the lobby.

FAQ

When does Gen Con hotel registration open?

For 2026, the housing portal opened February 22, two weeks after badge sales began on February 8. Gen Con posts each year’s date on gencon.com.

Is Gen Con housing really a lottery?

Gen Con assigns random access times to the housing portal for everyone who bought a badge by the cutoff. It does not call this a lottery, but the random order decides who sees downtown rooms first.

Can I book a downtown Gen Con hotel for just two nights?

Not through the housing block. Downtown requests must cover at least four consecutive nights including Wednesday through Saturday; the Marriott Downtown requires five.

Do I need a badge to book a Gen Con hotel?

Yes, and the person who purchased the badge is the one who can request rooms on their account.
