A Gen Con budget has four lines: the badge, the bed, the food, and the hall. Three of them can be cut hard without making the weekend worse. The fourth, the Exhibit Hall, is where most people lose the money they saved on the other three.

This guide uses Gen Con’s published 2026 prices and housing rules, linked where they come from. It assumes you want to be there all four days, and it shows what changes if you do not.

What does a Gen Con badge cost?

Badge prices for the 2026 show, as announced by Gen Con and reported by Gaming Trend:

Badge2026 price
4-Day$164
Thursday$83
Friday$83
Saturday$112
Sunday$41
Trade Day (industry, Wednesday)$302

Gen Con’s badge page adds that Marion County imposes a 10% admissions tax on all badge types, and that prices are fixed and do not increase after the Ship to Me deadline. The show does not offer badge discounts. Prices for 2027 had not been posted when we checked; the show has not cut them in recent years.

The budget move is obvious from the table. Two single days, say Thursday and Sunday, cost $124 before tax against $164 for all four. If you only want the Exhibit Hall and a few games, Sunday alone is $41. Sunday is also the day many vendors discount what they do not want to ship home.

One more line item: event tickets. They are priced per event in small amounts, and $2 generic tickets work as standby. A disciplined schedule of eight events costs less than a single-day badge. We cover the system in Gen Con event registration.

Where should you sleep?

The bed is the biggest line and the most flexible.

The Gen Con housing block. Discounted rooms open in February through Gen Con’s housing portal, with access times assigned at random to badge purchasers. In 2026, housing opened February 22. Downtown hotels in the block require four or more consecutive nights including Wednesday through Saturday, and the hotel charges a non-refundable deposit of one night plus tax. Downtown rooms go fast. We explain the whole system in the Gen Con hotel problem.

Suburban hotels with a shuttle or a drive. The block includes hotels outside downtown with fewer restrictions. A room 15 minutes out usually costs far less than a connected downtown hotel, and Gen Con notes that suburban hotels generally carry no minimum-night rule. Parking downtown adds a daily charge, so budget for it, or park at Gen Con’s official iPark lots by Lucas Oil Stadium, which run a free shuttle to the convention center.

Split a room. Four people in a two-queen room is the oldest Gen Con budget trick. Gen Con allows a purchaser to request one room per one to two badges, so coordinate who books.

Stay with someone. If you know anyone in the Indianapolis area, this is the week to be a good guest. Bring a game as a thank-you.

Day-trip. From anywhere within two hours, driving in for a day or two beats a hotel. Indianapolis locals do Gen Con this way as a matter of course; see Gen Con for locals.

How do you eat for four days without spending a fortune?

Downtown Indianapolis restaurant prices are normal city prices, and during Gen Con the waits are anything but normal. The budget version:

  • Breakfast at the hotel if it is included; if not, buy cereal and fruit on the way in and eat in the room.
  • Pack lunch. A sandwich, fruit, and nuts in your bag. Eat it in the open gaming area or outside. The hour you save on the line is worth more than the money.
  • One real dinner a day, and walk ten minutes from the convention center to find it. Prices and waits drop with every block.
  • Food trucks at the Block Party on South Street are faster than sit-down and usually cheaper.
  • A grocery run on Wednesday for the whole group: water, snacks, breakfast. Downtown has a few options and the suburbs have everything.

A reasonable food budget on this plan is $25 to $40 a day. Without a plan, double it.

How do you survive the Exhibit Hall with money left?

The Exhibit Hall is designed to be irresistible. Hundreds of publishers, convention-exclusive editions, demos staffed by people who are good at demos. Here is how to walk through it solvent.

  1. Set a number before you enter. Cash in an envelope works. So does a note on your phone that you have to open to spend against.
  2. Do a no-buy lap first. Thursday morning, walk the hall and write down what you liked. Buy nothing.
  3. Demo before you buy. Most big-box regrets were bought on the strength of the box.
  4. Compare to online prices. Convention prices are sometimes higher than the big online retailers and sometimes lower. Look it up at the booth. Convention exclusives and signed copies are the exception, because they do not exist anywhere else.
  5. Wait for Sunday. Vendors discount to avoid shipping stock home. Not everything, and not the hot items, but enough.
  6. Factor shipping. A $60 game that costs $20 to ship home is an $80 game. Leave room in your luggage or budget the box.

Games that give the most play per dollar at Gen Con prices are the small-box ones: The Crew, Hanabi, Skull, No Thanks. A $15 card game you play fifty times beats a $90 box you play twice.

The first column is where the money goes. The second column is how most regulars actually do it. The third costs less than a nice dinner and gives you the Exhibit Hall, the costumes, and an afternoon of open gaming.

What is worth paying for?

Budgets are about choices, not deprivation. Three things we would not cut:

  • A badge for every day you will actually be there. Sneaking around without one is not a budget strategy.
  • Comfortable shoes. The cheapest health insurance at Gen Con.
  • One meal with people you met that weekend. Pick the cheap place, but go.

The things to cut are the ones that only cost money: the downtown hotel premium when a suburb and a shuttle do the same job, the restaurant lunch when a sandwich is in your bag, and the big box you have not demoed.

The game is the reason. The people are the point. None of the people cost anything.
