How to Teach a Board Game in Five Minutes

A simple five-step method for teaching any board game fast, so new players feel confident, nobody reads the rulebook aloud, and the table starts playing sooner.

The person who teaches the game has more power over the night than the person who brought it. A great teach turns a confusing box into a fun evening. A bad one turns it into homework.

You do not need to be a rules expert. You need a plan.

This is the five-minute version. The full training is free: The Ludarium Guild of Game Guides takes you from picking the right game to running a first game newcomers love, in 35 short lessons. Finish the capstone and earn the title Expert Game Guide.

Know it before they arrive

Read the rules once, then set up the game and play a few turns by yourself. You will spot the confusing parts long before your friends do. Watching a short how-to-play video helps too.

Teach in this order

  1. The theme in one sentence. “We are rival bakers racing to fill orders before the shop closes.” A story makes rules easier to remember.
  2. How you win. Every rule makes more sense once people know the goal.
  3. A turn, step by step. Walk through one turn using real pieces on the table.
  4. The big gotcha. Most games have one rule that surprises people. Say it out loud now.
  5. Start playing. Save the rare rules for when they actually happen.

Things to skip

  • Reading the rulebook aloud. Paraphrase instead. Keep the book nearby for questions.
  • Every exception up front. Nobody remembers them until they matter.
  • Strategy tips nobody asked for. Let people discover the clever moves. That is half the fun.

Play the first round open

Let everyone play with their cards face up for the first round, or call it a practice round. Players can ask “what should I do here?” without feeling silly, and the whole table learns together.

The goal of a teach is not perfect understanding. It is getting everyone playing, curious, and comfortable asking questions. The rest comes with the second game.
