If you want a game night in Indianapolis this week and do not have a group, there is a public table for you on almost every night of the week. Some are free meetups in brewery back rooms. Some are store events with a small fee. One is a library afternoon for adults only. This guide sorts the confirmed ones by day so you can match a night to your calendar, then explains how to walk into a room of strangers and leave with a game.

Schedules change constantly. Everything below was checked against the venue’s own site or a current listing in October 2026. Confirm on the group’s page before you go, and tell us when something moves.

How do public game nights in Indianapolis work?

Three kinds, and they feel different.

Meetup groups at bars and breweries. The biggest is Indy Board Game Nomads, with more than 5,000 members and standing nights at several venues. Free, bring-your-own-game or play what is on the table, buy a drink to thank the host venue. The crowd is mostly adults in their twenties through fifties, and newcomers are expected.

Store nights. Friendly local game stores run Commander, Pokémon, Lorcana, and open play. Usually free or a few dollars. More structured than a brewery night and better for a specific game.

Library programs. Free, quiet, and sometimes age-restricted. The most welcoming rooms in the city for a true beginner.

Which night is right for a first-timer?

It depends on what you want the night to feel like.

  • You want to learn without pressure. Shuffle & Roll at the Fishers library. Daytime, adults, free, and the staff bring the games.
  • You want a beer and a big table. Any Indy Board Game Nomads night. Every other Monday at St. Joseph Brewery has a dedicated upstairs room and food; Every other Thursday at Voodoo in Fishers is the north-side option.
  • You already have a Commander deck. Sunday at Good Games. Free, casual, and downtown.
  • You are bringing kids. The Garage on a Tuesday evening or a library family night. Red Lion is 21+, but the Voodoo night in Fishers is listed as all ages.
  • You want a specific hobby game. Store events. See our Indianapolis store guide for the full list by neighborhood.

How do you walk into a game night where you know nobody?

This is the real barrier, and it is smaller than it looks from the door.

  1. Arrive at the start time. Tables form in the first twenty minutes. Walking in an hour late means waiting for a game to end.
  2. Say the sentence. “Hi, I’m new, is there room?” That sentence is why the group exists. Nobody at a public game night is surprised by it.
  3. Bring one game you can teach in five minutes. Codenames, Sushi Go, The Crew, No Thanks. A teachable game makes you a host instead of a guest.
  4. Play what is offered. Your first night is for meeting people, not for the game you drove in to play.
  5. Buy a drink. The venue is donating the room. One purchase per person keeps the night alive.
  6. Come back the next week. The second visit is when names stick. Three visits and you are a regular.

A longer version of this, including what to do if the table is cliquey, is in our piece on finding a game night near you.

What is missing from the Indianapolis calendar?

Look at the table again and two gaps stand out.

Weekend evenings. Saturday nights have store events for Magic and Pokémon but no confirmed general board game meetup. Friday has one: a weekly board game night at Family Time Games on Michigan Road. Most people are free on exactly those nights.

Westfield and the far north. Fishers and Noblesville are covered. Carmel has store nights. Westfield has no public board game night, game store, or game cafe we could confirm. The Westfield library does host regular euchre, mahjong, and bridge afternoons for adults.

Gaps like these are usually filled by one person willing to be at the same table at the same time every week for two months. If you are that person, we wrote how to start a game night group. Tell us when you do and we will list it.

What would The Ludarium add to the calendar?

The missing nights. The Ludarium is building a membership game lounge in Indianapolis, and the gaps above are the ones we most want it to fill: weekend evenings, taught tables for beginners, and a standing north-side night. Members would get reserved seats and the library, and the city would get a room that is for playing and nothing else.

FAQ

Is there a free board game night in Indianapolis?

Yes. Indy Board Game Nomads runs free meetups at Red Lion Grog House, St. Joseph Brewery, and Voodoo Brewing; Good Games hosts free Casual Commander on Sundays; and Hamilton East Public Library’s Shuffle & Roll is free on the first Thursday of the month.

Where is a board game night in Fishers or Carmel?

Every other Thursday at Voodoo Brewing in Fishers with Indy Board Game Nomads, and the first-Thursday Shuffle & Roll at the Fishers library. Carmel’s options are store events at Hero’s Emporium and Next Level Games.

Do I need to bring a game to a public game night?
