Last-minute board game gifts are easier than they look, because the best ones were never about shipping. In the final week before the holiday you can still order a great small game if it can arrive in time, pick one up at a local shop, print one at home, send a digital gift that arrives in seconds, or give a promise of a game night that costs nothing. The only real deadline is for mail.
The quick answer: order a small game that plays in twenty minutes, such as Sushi Go! or Skull, on Amazon if it can still arrive in time. If not, try your local game store. If neither works, send an RPG adventure PDF or an online board game membership, or write a card that promises a game night and name the date.
Prices are approximate at the time of writing and will move in December. Every game name in the table links to Amazon.

How late can you still order a board game online?
Later than you think, but not as late as you hope. For 2026, USPS recommends mailing by these dates for delivery before December 25 within the lower 48 states, per its holiday shipping deadlines:
| Mail class | Send by |
|---|---|
| Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail | Thursday, December 17 |
| Priority Mail | Friday, December 18 |
| Priority Mail Express | Saturday, December 19 |
Those are dates for mailing a package yourself. Online stores need time to pick and pack your order before it reaches the carrier, so their own cutoffs are usually earlier. Check the delivery date Amazon shows at checkout before you order, and treat any date as a hope, not a promise. If it lands before your holiday, ordering online is the easiest route.
If the delivery date is too late, stop refreshing tracking pages. A local shop is the backup, and everything else below works without the mail.
What can you buy in a store the week of Christmas?
Your local game store
If an order cannot arrive in time, a local game store is the best stop, for one reason: a person who knows games will help you pick. Tell them who the gift is for, how many people they usually play with, and how much you want to spend. In five minutes you will leave with something better than you would have found alone. Call ahead and many stores will set a game aside for you to pick up. Our guide to Small Business Saturday at your local game store has more on why these shops are worth the trip.
Big-box stores and bookstores
Target, Walmart, and Barnes & Noble all carry board games, and stock varies by store. The well-known titles are the safest bet: Codenames, Ticket to Ride, Catan, and a wall of small card games. Check the store’s app for local stock before you drive, since many big-box sites show what is on the shelf at each location.
Small games to look for
Whether you order online or shop in person, small games are the safest last-minute buy, and they are often still on the shelf when the big boxes are gone. Any of these makes a fine gift, and all of them teach in a few minutes:
| Game | Players | Time | About | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Catan: On the Road | 3 to 4 | 15 min | $10 | Catan fans |
| Hanabi | 2 to 5 | 30 min | $13 | Puzzle lovers |
| Sushi Go! | 2 to 5 | 15 min | $15 to $17 | Families with kids 8 and up |
| Skull | 3 to 6 | 30 min | $21 | Groups who like to bluff |
| Codenames: Duet | 2 or more | 15 min | $25 | Couples |

One rule for the last week: buy a game you could teach yourself on the day. A big strategy game with a two-hour rulebook is a gift that waits until spring. Our guide to learning a board game you got for Christmas helps whoever opens it get playing the same afternoon.

Can you print a board game at home?
Yes. Print-and-play games are games sold or shared as PDF files. You print the pages, cut out the cards or tiles, and supply a few common items like dice, coins, or pencils. Some are free, and many cost a few dollars from the designer. Board game sites and indie storefronts list thousands of them.
For a gift, choose one with a short component list, ideally a few sheets of cards or a single page you write on. Print on card stock if you have it, cut everything out, and put it in a small box or an envelope with a bow. A handmade game reads as more thoughtful than a store-bought one, because it is. Our guide to print and play board games explains how the format works and what makes one easy to assemble.
What are the best digital gifts for gamers?
Digital gifts arrive the moment you buy them, so they work right up to the last hour.
An RPG adventure PDF
For someone who plays or wants to try tabletop role-playing games, a PDF is a full evening of play delivered by email. The Ludarium sells adventure PDFs for open-license RPGs in our store, $9.99 each. Each one is a complete solo adventure with the rules you need, so the person can play it alone without finding a group first. You can try the first act of each free in the RPG Demo Library before you buy. Our gifts for tabletop RPG players has more ideas.
An online board game membership
Board Game Arena lets people play more than a thousand board games in a web browser with friends anywhere. A Premium membership opens up more of its games and features, and Board Game Arena sells gift codes for one month or one year that you can print or send digitally. A year of Premium costs $42 as of the most recent price change. It is a good fit for a friend who moved away, since you can give the membership and then play with them on it.
A gift card
A gift card is the classic last-minute gift, and for gamers it is better than most. People who play games usually know exactly what they want next, and you may not. A card from their local game store also supports a shop that may host their game nights. For RPG players, DriveThruRPG, the biggest store for RPG PDFs, sells gift certificates you can send by email.
Wrap it with something small, like a deck of cards or a set of dice, so there is something to open.
How do you give the promise of a game night?
This is the gift that costs nothing and often means the most. A card that promises time together, with a date on it, says something a box cannot.
Make it specific. A vague “let’s play games sometime” never happens. A good promise card names four things:
- When. A real date in January, not “soon.”
- What. A game, or “you pick, I will learn it.”
- Who. Just the two of you, the whole family, or “bring three friends.”
- What you will handle. Snacks, hosting, or teaching the rules.
Here is a template you can copy onto a card:
“Game night, Saturday, January 9, at my place. You pick the game. I bring the snacks, learn the rules, and do the dishes.”
If they live far away, promise an online game night instead and pair it with the Board Game Arena code above. If you are giving it to a whole group, let them vote on the game with Game Night Madness, our free bracket app.
Then keep the promise. The card is only a gift if the night happens. The game is the reason. The people are the point.
What should you avoid in the last week?
- Sellers you do not recognize. Late-December listings at low prices from unknown third-party sellers can turn out to be counterfeit or damaged. On Amazon, check that the game is shipped and sold by Amazon or by the publisher.
- Games that need hours of setup or study. Save those for a birthday.
- Expansions, unless you know they own the base game. An expansion is useless without it.
- Paying for rush shipping on a gift card. Buy the digital version.
