Questions

What is the best way to get back into Yu-Gi-Oh!?

Start with the 2-Player Starter Set. It has two ready-to-play decks and a 64-page teaching comic that walks you through a scripted Duel, Synchro and Xyz Summons included. Then find an Official Tournament Store near you with Konami's locator.

What is the Extra Monster Zone in Yu-Gi-Oh!?

It is a pair of zones in the middle of the field, between the two players. Each player normally uses only one. Since the 2021 rules update, Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Monsters can go straight to your Main Monster Zones, but Link Monsters and face-up Pendulum Monsters from the Extra Deck still need the Extra Monster Zone or a zone a Link Monster points to.

Do you draw a card on the first turn in Yu-Gi-Oh!?

No. The player who goes first skips their draw on their first turn and cannot conduct a Battle Phase that turn. Both players start with 5 cards and 8000 Life Points.

Can I still use my old Yu-Gi-Oh! cards?

Most older cards are still legal, but some are Forbidden or Limited on the current list, and older wording can read differently from today's text. Check each card on the official Forbidden and Limited list and in Konami's card database before you build.

What is Genesys in Yu-Gi-Oh!?

Genesys is an official format with no Link or Pendulum Monsters, played on the original field with no Extra Monster Zones. Instead of the usual Forbidden and Limited list, some cards cost points and a deck must stay within a point cap, usually 100. Some Official Tournament Stores run it.
